Kentucky Welcomes Y'all to The State

Moving to Kentucky Guide

So you've decided to embark on a new adventure and buy a home in Kentucky.  Here is some good advice from all of us at Sallie Davidson REALTORS® to make your move to the "Bluegrass State" easy.

#1 Plan for Moving Season

Sometimes we cannot control the timing of our move; however, when you can, plan for an autumn move.  Summers in Kentucky are hot while the Spring is typically wet.  However, Autumn in Kentucky brings crisp, cool temperature and often drier air.

#2 College Basketball Rules

Kentucky is home to one of the biggest college basketball rivalry in the country: the UK Wildcats versus the University of Louisville Cardinals. You'll need to pick sides very quickly or buck the trend and root for one of the smaller colleges in the state.

Cumberland Falls Moonbow

#3 Discover the Moonbow

Home to the largest waterfalls south of Niagra, Cumberland Falls State Park is a sight to behold.  Head there during a full moon to experience a moonbow: a rainbow formed by the moonlight reflecting on the falls.

#4 Start a Business

Whether you want to start a small business or grow your career, the low cost of doing business in Kentucky means a wealth of opportunities.  Seven of the largest global corporations call Kentucky home.  Ease of state travel makes it a great place to start a business.

Kentucky and horse racing

#5  A Lot Happens in Just Two Minutes

Louisville may be the home of the Kentucky Derby, but come every May the entire state celebrates the most exciting two minutes in sport.

#6  It's a Great Place to Raise a Family

Kentucky loves kids.  While the Bluegrass State is known for horse racing, bourbon, and Corvettes, we are a kid-friendly state offering everything from cave-exploring adventures and zoos to museums and amusement parks.

#7 Feast on Favorite Kentucky Fare

Kentucky loves it barbeque.  Whether you spell it BBQ, barbeque or barbeque, it means different things to different people in different part of Kentucky.  Barbeque means two different things in Kentucky.  In Western Kentucky, a BBQ sandwich features mutton shoulder with a Worcestershire-based dipping sauce. I n Southern and Central KY, BBQ sandwiches consist of sliced, pork with a vinegar-based sauce.

Kentucky Bourbon

#8  Don't Forget the Bourbon or the Mint Juleps.

The Bluegrass State produces nearly all of the world's bourbon.  It is also home of the world's most-famous, bourbon-based cocktail: The Mint Julep. To make your own, use this hint: gently bruise mint leaves, rather than grind them to a pulp.

#9 Prepare for the Transition

When moving to Kentucky, be aware it's a commonwealth state.  Each county or municipality has its own rules about parking, local utilities and necessary permits. Contact your new home county to get the full scoop. After moving, the state requests you register your car within 15 days and transfer your license within 30 days.
