Lexington KY's Castle Post

Lexington KY Castle Post

When picturing beautiful, historic, stone castles located on rolling green hills, you may imagine a journey to Ireland or another European country. Visiting a picturesque castle does not require international travel.  In fact, The Castle Post in Lexington, KY offers visitors the opportunity to explore a historic castle.

An Obscure and Legendary Castle

For nearly four decades, obscurity, legend, and rumors surrounded the castle.  On Versailles Road, just outside of Lexington proper, sits a beautiful, 50-acre piece of Lexington real estate. Featuring beautiful, rolling hills, bluegrass meadows and views of the Elkhorn Creek watershed, the property was once quintessential Kentucky countryside. In 1969, a wealthy couple, fresh from a European vacation, began to construct a breathtaking, stone castle on the property.  Construction moved slowly on the castle, once known as the Martin Castle, named for its original owners. By 1975, the Martins' marriage had fallen to the wayside, and the castle sat lonely and incomplete on its hill.

For the next few decades, the Martin Castle sat empty, becoming a favorite source of local gossip. People loved to talk about what would become of the empty castle. Rumors began to swirl around Lexington as people speculated that a public museum or a medieval restaurant would take over the space. In 1988, Mr. Martin finally listed the place for sale, but would not live to see what became of his unfinished fortress.

A Castle Ablaze

After Mr. Post purchased the castle on the hill in 2004, he renamed the property "The Castle Post" and began extensive renovations. He dreamed of transforming The Castle Post into a premiere destination for vacationers, as well as special event space for Lexington residents.  Unfortunately, tragedy struck the castle on May 10, 2004.  Renovated woodwork and electrical wiring caught fire; eventually, the castle was fully engulfed in flame. The castle's embers barely cooled before rumors again took hold.  It seemed that everyone had a theory about the Castle Post fire's cause. Some of the more popular theories included: lightning, malicious arson, and insurance fraud.  No charges were ever filed in regards to the fire, and the owners eventually decided to rebuild.

Castle Post Hotel

Reborn as a Hotel

In 2009, The Castle Post, once the subject of rumors and tall tales, opened its doors as one of the prime, resort-style destination near Lexington, KY. The newly renovated hotel sported the kinds of spaces you would expect to find in any self-respecting castle, including a reading room, a music room, luxury suites, a game room, a formal ballroom, and beautifully manicured gardens. Visitors to The Castle Post immediately feel a sense of opulence and grander, as they are greeted by 12 foot, wooden doors opening into the breathtaking Great Hall. The hotel's guest suites each feature an elegant sitting room, windows framing the panoramic views, a private bath and spacious bedroom.

In addition to the stunning interiors, visitors to The Castle Post have the opportunity to experience many amenities. Discover a sundeck and shuffleboard courts on the castle's rooftop recreation area. Elsewhere on the property, challenge yourself to a game of tennis. The hotel also offers five star services including an on-site concierge, an event coordinator, and world-class dining.
